Background:
Aristophanes' comedy about the Greek women's sex-strike for peace was
produced at the Festival of the Lenaea in 411 B.C. We have no records about
the awarding of the prizes, but this is one of the best comedies Aristophanes
wrote. In a period when the Sicilian Expedition had been a dismal failure,
Athens colonies were revolting, the Spartans were uniting with the Persians to
control the Aegean, and there was a smouldering unrest within the city,
