Introduction

For the season of 1902-1903, the Moscow Art Theater had a new building
with revolving stage, advanced lighting effects, and spacious quarters for the
actors. The Theater's directors very much hoped that Chekhov would give them a
new play to inaugurate the season. But in January of 1902, Chekhov wrote to
his wife: "I have no faith yet in the play. It has hardly dawned in my brain,
like the first glow of sunrise, and I don't know myself what it is to be, what
will come of it."
